What’s On My Mind – Too Many Losses

February 2, 2021 by bappelbaum Leave a Comment

Usually, a new year starts off on a positive note. We are hopeful about what the year may bring in regard to opportunity, success, health, happiness, and prosperity for ourselves and loved ones. This year, in one month, has been filled with so much loss.

First and foremost, January was the deadliest month for Covid-19 since the pandemic began. Although, on the upside, hospitalizations and number of cases are on the decline now that the vaccination process has begun. On January 6th, the U.S. Capitol was attacked by domestic terrorists seeking for the demise of our democracy. Lives were lost, many injured, and several more traumatized for life. It was a scene like none other in our history. And, on a personal note, we lost more friends to Covid-19 and/or cancer. To say the least, the year started off on a grim note.

Life is clearly not always sunshine and roses. However, even when times are tough, we still have the opportunity to choose how we react. We can be angry. We can shut down. We can lash out. Or, we can seek out a lesson to be learned. We can strengthen our resilience and ability to cope. We can prevail when the sh*t hits the fan and reach out a helping hand to those who cannot help themselves. It’s up to you to choose how you  want to react. And as I wrote in my book, Be Your Own Superhero; A Road Map to Resilience When Faced with Chronic Dis-ease, when you need a hero – become one.
